The Big School Bus Well most parents whom have kids that are in their last year at primary often refer to going to Secondary school as " My kids going to the big school next year " and if you are going by transport then its " Going to the Big School in the Big School Bus " and that for many parents and kids can be one of the most challenging and worrying aspects of their lives.
M.Line in partnership with Clackmannanshire Council Education Transport Team would like to try and help erase those fears you may have both as a parent and pupil going to school for the first time by bus.
M.Line adopt a very strong policy on many issues that maybe of concern to you and we would like to put your minds at rest with regards to some of issues that may cause you concern - Issues like Bullying - Smoking - Pick Up Points and times - and in general how we go about our business each day in Mainstream School Transport Operations.
From the minute your child steps on board we are monitoring all aspects of behaviour via our CCTV system which are also in view of our drivers. CCTV since it was brought into operation along with Scottish Parliamentary Laws eroded many of the problems that were associated with School Bus Transport - Smoking in particular has now been eradicated from the system with the last smoking report issue on our fleet being in 2007 - Another very contentious issue Bullying has reduced considerably and most issues of a small nature are soon stopped quickly with quick intervention to stop same.
M.Line operate a safety policy monitoring system with senior managers in place at school parking areas each day and all matters relating to loading - behaviour and in particular any matters that may have been identified by drivers or CCTV footage are dealt with quickly to stop continual offending and breaches of policy continuing on a regular basis. Our monitoring staff are very approachable and we encourage pupils to liaise with us about any problems of fears they may have and this type of operation has been a great success with teaching staff from all schools present also to assist in all aspects of the home to school transport.
SO DO WE HAVE CONFRONTATION WITH SOME PARENTS ?
Sadly its a " Yes" to this question and we understand that many parents see their child in a different viewpoint at home than is the case on the bus - So from time to time we do get parents attack our policies and I can to some degree understand this especially if a third party has been involved " I call it the " Crystal Ball " effect - That's what a parent wants to see in their minds set and often it does amaze me of the story brought back from the pupil to parent which often differs from the real situation that has happened.
SO HOW DO WE DEAL WITH THIS ?
We hope in reading this article you may take time out to think on what may have actually happened that has brought your child to the attention of either drivers or monitoring staff that may have resulted in a behavioural punishment and we find good dialogue and chatting about the issue often results in no future offending and that pupil going on in school transport life never coming to our attention again. However perpetual offending could lead to a suspension from school transport which can be inconvenient to parents and also bring about a cost related issue to your family budget if you have to arrange transport yourself.
DRIVERS
All drivers and staff related to school transport must have SCRO accreditation which is a certificate granted under the Scottish Criminal Records Office criteria which means all staff have been checked to make sure they are able to work with children and don't have any serious breaches with regards offences that may cause concern if working with children. These records are reviewed on a regular basis and operated and checked by Clackmannanshire Councils Transport Teams.
We encourage our drivers & staff to get to know pupils and where possible keep the same drivers on the same route each day. Most drivers have many years of experience in driving your " Big School Bus " and pupils get to know drivers and liaise with them which helps in our goal of promoting safe school transport.
